At the Opera
pen and ink 11x14" unmatted NFS
This is a page from my sketchbook
done in the theatre while holding the
sketchbook in my lap in the dark. I
couldn't see the page--the drawing
was done largely by feel while looking
at the scene in front of me. While this
seems not very credible, it is in fact
quite do-able with practice. Your hand
gets trained to judge relative
placements of shapes. I just added the
shadings later during the intermission.
I'll admit the result pleased me as
being more realistic in its proportions
than can be the case. More usually
when doing such blind drawing, your
result has a more picasso-ish
juxtoposition of elements. The sketch
served as the basis of a later colored
monotype also pictured in a thumbnail
on this page (click to enlarge).
