Beavertail Light Tower
watercolor
20x26" matted and framed
Beavertail Lighthouse is the oldest in
Rhode Island, prominently set on the
easternmost point of Jamestown
Island. It still guides the way for ships
to the entrance to Newport Harbor and
on into Narragansett Bay and
Providence, Rhode Island. the
lighthouse is a perenneal favorite of all
local artists. The unusual gray square
stone tower surrounded by red-roofed,
white stuccoed side buildings are
striking. Placement on a rocky
outcropping makes for dynamic
paintings of crashing waves and often
angry skies against its unusual
architecture. And, of course, on hot
summer days, cool sea breeze makes
painting there even more of a pleasure.
