Gulls in a Tidal Pool
watercolor  11x14" matted and framed

These birds were pecking at the leavings of
high tide one morning when I was painting
along the shores of Newport, Rhode Island.
I love linework in my art, and after laying in
washes of color for the rocks, water and
basic shapes of the gulls, I sketched the
birds and one edge of the pool with thick
paint loaded onto the sharper stick end of
my brush. Maybe not a conventional way to
paint, but you'd be surprised how many
artists use rags and tissues, ear swabs,
knives,  feathers, salt, sand, spray bottles,
and of course the old child's finger painting
technique to get effects they want. I
confess guilty to all of the above.
