Gray Skies in New Mexico
oil 11x14" and framed

My wife Gail and I took a painting
vacation to the southwestern United
States in April, when the weather is
changeable, to say the least. We would
start on warm sunny day, and a few
minutes later, drive into a snow squall. I'd
never realized how amazingly varied
western light could be,and especially
when we had so many amazing cloud
patterns in the spring skies. For a New
England painter, water has always been
daunting, with ever changing waves. We
were surprised to find the colors and
shapes of sun and shadow on the rock in
New Mexico were also never the same.
Desert and the ocean have a lot in
common to frustrate and reward an artist.
