Mount Hope Bridge, Rhode Island
watercolor  20x26" matted and framed

My little note on this painting is actually
an unlikely love story. You take this
beautiful two lane suspension bridge to
cross from the east bay shore of
Rhode Island to Aquidnick Island and
Newport. It's spidery structure of
steelwork, high open towers, delicate
arching cables and  old-fashioned
lantern streetlights give the bridge
style and grace harkening to an earlier
age. I did this watercolor from a grassy
park area beneath one end. Most
people find the Mount Hope a truely
breathtaking creation, a veritable work
of art, but a woman visiting my studio
recently told me she and her husband
were so taken by the bridge they
actually wanted to be married right in
the middle of it. That certainly would
have stopped traffic, and
unfortunately-- almost certainly for that
very reason--the powers that be
wouldn't allow romance to have its way.
Nevertheless, I can report they did
wed, but have a soft spot in their
hearts still for the old Mount Hope
Bridge.
