Old Tow Truck at Carolina Mills
watercolor  12x16" matted and
framed

My wife, Gail Armstrong, and I are
partial to paintng junk and
abandoned things. The incongruity
of this old wrecker, now itself a
wreck, left to rot in the woods,
seemed a kind of sad poetic justice. I
liked the way the decaying machine
is surrounded by vibrant nature. The
world seems to be happily going
along turning the rusting works of
man into a not unattractive part of
the earth again. The whole of
Carolina Mills, an old nineteenth
century yarn factory, is, in fact, being
lovingly preserved by its owner, not
as a reconstruction, but as the
beautiful ruin it has become.
